Intro
I was CHUI 100% of the time with part-time support for two other co-workers, a project manager, and a fellow UI/UX designer who also helped with development when needed. Even though this was a small team, we made a huge impact across the organization. I introduced Bootstrap, Font Awesome and Sass to my department as a solution to leverage these existing technologies/services to create custom UI/UX recommendations for other departments’ internal business apps.
I was the lead UI/UX designer and developer on the CHUI self-help website. This site provided users with guidelines and code resources to help them create UI’s that fit the company’s standards which our team developed.
We worked to ensure that even the most design-challenged developer would find our guidelines and components easy to use, understand and implement. We provided all of the code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.) for our UI/UX recommendations.
The Challenge
The most difficult part of this project was getting traditional telecom folks to understand the value of solid UI design based on UX research.
The Process
Starting from a blank slate, we evaluated the current state of the broader organization’s internal apps. This included user interviews and countless meetings with product owners and department heads.

All UI recommendations were made based on existing Bootstrap components so developers with no front-end experience (CSS challenged folks) could focus on backend development and not UI. We included HTM and CSS snippets and a CDN link to our internal CSS.

The Impact
Once people saw the site and started to understand the need for good UI and UX evaluations, we had a backlog of engagements. We even had many opportunities to go beyond our main focus of UI/UX recommendations and provide print media, video, and motion graphics.
